The Berlin Lake Association recently received assistance with their lake clean-up project in the form of signage provided by the Berlin Lake Army Corps of Engineers and grant money from the Mahoning County Green Team. The eight signs from the Corps which read: "Adopted Shoreline Berlin Lake Association, Please do not litter" were recently erected by several members of the association on two of the bridges that span Berlin Lake. The association was also awarded grant money from the Mahoning County Green Team for their dedicated clean-up efforts. The association used the money to purchase recycling bins, which will be placed at area campgrounds and businesses.
In a recent clean-up, Berlin Lake Association
members spent three hours collecting
seventy-two bags of trash from the areas surrounding the Route 224 and Route 14 bridges. Trash bags were donated by the U.S. Army Corps of engineers who also picked up and disposed of the refuse that was collected.
Everything from old tires, propane canisters, fish bait boxes, cans, bottles, clothing, shoes and even a sewing machine were part of the collection. "It's amazing the things people dump out here", replied one member while climbing the banks of the lake.
The Berlin Lake Association has two clean-up days each year. One is held in the spring and another in the fall toward the end of the recreational season.
"We hope our visibility at the beginning and end of the season will prompt people to think twice about leaving their trash behind", said President of the association, Tim Taylor. "It doesn't take much to pick up after yourself, another member commented. Berlin is a beautiful lake. If everyone does their part we can keep it that way."
