In Ewing, Kids Vote Too!
Thousands of New Jersey students in grades K-12 voted at their neighborhood polling sites on Election Day in Kids Voting New Jersey’s simulated election. Kids Voting New Jersey participating communities this year included Berkley Heights, EWING, Hopewell Township, Hopewell Borough, Hopewell Township, Millburn, Pennington Borough, Ringwood, Summit, and Union Township. Students voted on the same candidates and issues that adults voted on in the official balloting.
For the fifth year, Ewing’s kids have had the opportunity to vote at KidsVoting/Ewing polls. In, fact, Ewing was one of the original pilot communities for the statewide KidsVoting/New Jersey effort. Candace Mueller, a Kiwanis member since 2002, has been the volunteer coordinator for the Ewing program since its inception. Also supporting the program in Ewing has been the Key Club at Ewing High and the Circle K Club at The College of New Jersey. Both of these clubs provide valuable assistance through their members volunteering their time to be the poll workers for the KidsVoting booths at the five public school buildings. These young people have served as wonderful role models to Ewing’s children, encouraging them as the vote and congratulating them on taking the time to learn about voting and the important responsibility it is . In addition, Kiwanis member, Bruce White, has personally assisted with the “Results Party”, held immediately after the KidsVoting polls close, at the Ewing Baskin-Robbins. While children wearing their “I Voted” sticker line up for their free ice cream cone, the kids’ votes are tallied and the results are posted on the ice cream shop walls, for kids and parents alike to view. After five years, KidsVoting/Ewing has established Election Day as a family tradition, where kids join their parents in voting, and all come for ice cream to learn of the results from the kids’ voting choices.
“I am so grateful to the Kiwanis organization here in Ewing because with their support over the years, KidsVoting/Ewing has been received with enthusiasm by kids and their parents.” Mueller says, “And, because of my introduction to Kiwanis in this way, I was honored to be invited to join a group that has had such a positive influence on so many Ewing children.”
.
The program also has a very strong partnership with Ewing Public Schools, where teachers and administrators discuss voting and the opportunity the Ewing kids have to vote on Election Day.
Mueller’s efforts are educational, as she observes: “The ultimate goal of the KidsVoting program is to make voting a habit for the upcoming generation of adult citizens. Now that the kids in Ewing have an Election Day tradition, we remind them to keep it up and always go vote when they are 18 and older. An additional benefit of the program is that the kids’ parents are also getting into the habit of voting, being role models for their own kids and others.” As Mueller often states: “In Ewing, Kids Vote Too!”
