Ewing Kiwanis Foundation History :
The Ewing Kiwanis club was founded in the mid l950's and from the beginning the club member began an active role with the support of students in the Ewing Public Schools through an active scholarship and leadership award program. In l960 the Key Club was established at Ewing High School, the key Club quickly became the main leadership school service organization in the high school.

Annually from the mid l950's through the l990's the Ewing Kiwanians worked diligently on various fund raisers to support the scholarships and leadership awards. Over the years the scholarship awards increased from fifty dollars per award to one thousand dollars for each award. In the mid l980's the club membership determined it was time to investigate establishing a perpetual foundation for funding the scholarships awarded by the Ewing Kiwanis Club.

In the late l980's fundraising efforts started, by laws developed and application process to the Internal Revenue Service was initiated to meet the goal of an on going scholarship foundation program sponsored through the Ewing Kiwanis Club. The primary financial goal was to develop a sufficient capital base that would permit the awarding of the annual scholarships from investments as well as expanding the capital base in order to grant additional scholarships each year.

Today, the KIWANIS CLUB OF EWING FOUNDATION, INC. is a certified Federal Internal Revenue Service as a 501(C)(3) charitable foundation whose primary focus is educational scholarships. Charitable donations to the foundation are tax deductible. The foundation receives its donations from individual, corporate and local business contributions and fundraising efforts through the Ewing Kiwanis Club.

The foundation governance is a nine member board of past officers of the Ewing Kiwanis Club, all who give their time and efforts at no expense to the Foundation. One hundred percent of all monies that have been or are raised through either investments or donations are used for maintain the capital base or for student scholarship awards.

Annually, since l990, two one thousand dollar scholarships have been awarded by the Foundation, The GEORGE A. BERRELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP and the EWING KIWANIS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP. The general eligibility requirements are completion of an application, including an essay on the importance of volunteerism, be a Ewing Township resident who will be attending an accredited college/university, community college or New Jersey accredited vocational-technical school. Additionally, the Berrell scholarship recipient must be an active member of a Key Club sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ewing Township.

The objective established by the leadership and membership in the late l980's has been realized. The Foundation has awarded more than FIFTY-FIVE individual one thousand dollar scholarships and additionally multiple scholarships in the amount of five hundred dollars. As finances permit, the Foundation Directors from year to year have decided to grant additional awards as many deserving students have sought support of the Kiwanis.

The criterion for awarding the scholarships is volunteer community service within school and/or out of school, leadership, and academic performance. Applications for the 2008 Ewing Kiwanis Foundation Scholarships will be posted at this web site on or about March 1, 2008.
