On Saturday, April 30, POAC (Parents of Autistic Children) sponsored the Mercer Walk for a Difference in Ewing at the Ewing High School. POAC is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit formed in 1999 to help families of children with Autism. The organization if totally self supporting through their fundraising activities such as Saturday's walk in Ewing and uses no state or federal funding. POAC provides about 224 training classes a year free of charge to families of autistic children with training on how to keep autistic kids safe in the community. Also, they have provided training to over 12,000 police and firemen in how to recognize autistic children. POAC was officially credited by the police for saving the lives of 3 children due to this type of training. Gary Weitzen, Executive Director of POAC said that over 750 people participated in this Saturday's walk, where 600 were registered walkers who attended to support the walk and 150 were volunteers from supporting organizations. The Ewing Kiwanis volunteered to cook lunch and served up fresh cooked hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages and donated the proceeds of those sales to POAC. Student groups from Ewing High School included the Basketball team and the Key Club and students from Rider University also volunteered to support the event. Other organizations supporting the event include Focus Autism, Hinkle, Fingles & Prior Attorneys at Law, David Lerner Associates, Inc., Hopewell Valley Community Bank, Ewing Public Education Foundation, Parents Educating Parents, Stouts Transportation, Princeton Mortgage Corporation and the Ewing Township Education Association were contributors to this year's event. Gary Weitzen expects that this year's donations will be about $20,000 which is $8,000 better than last year's walk. Contributions can still be made by visiting their website, http://www.poac.net. Visit the website for more information about this organization. In New Jersey, 1 in 94 children have autism.
