Dunedain:
Aragorn, Rangers "The Dunedain were superior to other Men in nobility of spirit and body, although they were of course capable of evil if corrupted. They were tall, with dark hair and grey eyes. The lifespan of the royal family, origianlly three times that of lesser Men (210 years), was by the time of the War of the Ring still about the 150 years or more" (Foster 123). "Suddenly Frodo noticed that a strange-looking weather-beaten man, sitting in the shadows near the wall, was also listening intently to the hobbit-talk . . . His legs were stretched out before him, showing high boots of supple leather that fitted him well, but had seen much wear and were now caked with mud. A travel-stained cloak of heavy dark-green cloth was drawn close about him and in spite of the heat of the room he wore a hood that overshadowed his face; but the gleam of his eyes could be seen as he watched the hobbits" (Tolkien 153). "As Frodo drew near he [Strider] threw back his hood, showing a shaggy head of dark hair flecked with grey, and in a pale stern face a pair of keen grey eyes” (Tolkien 153). "It was a look [Elves' costume] that also influenced the costume design for Aragorn, who, while not an Elf, had been raised by Elrond among the Elves of Rivendell . . . Who knows, perhaps it was because he [Viggo Mortensen] washed and repairedAragorn's clothes himself that he so perfectly came to inhabit them -- to a point, indeed, where the costume seemed almost blended with his body.' Ngila pauses a moment in thought. 'You know,' she says at last, 'I really do think that particular costume is incredibly beautiful. It seems funny, perhaps, to talk about something that is so worn and brokend down, so darned and patched, as being beautiful -- but to me it is' " (Sibley 92).
