I. Introduction to Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus which came out Oct 4, 2009.

I can't believe how much I  actually enjoyed the Wii Fit,
and pre-ordered and purchased Wii Fit Plus (disk only), as soon as I could.
The picture of a person in a Tree Pose certainly didn't interest me.

All these months, I did not buy a Wii Fit, because I was satisfied with my Jane Fonda Body Sculpting
Exercise Videos and a fantastic Weight Watchers' Scale that measures weight in tenths of a pound,
plus keeps track of  weight lost since the start; distance to the goal; body fat; BMI; body water; and bone mass.

But, I bought Raving Rabbids and am considering other games that use the Wii Fit balance board.
(Raving Rabbids is advertised as a game you can play with your butt.)
So, I bought Wii Fit, and am amazed.

The center-fold of the Wii Fit Instruction Manual is a Map of the Basic Run Island.
The lower left corner has a picture of 6 Nintendo icons, and states, "Try to find all 15 of these marks
scattered around the island."
I have found and listed all 15 of them.
They are not tricky, like finding a pattern in the cracks of a rock.
They are all actual images, as if they are graffiti or a plastic picture,
painted or leaning against a rock, tree, or building.

II. 10 Wii Daily Body and Balance Tests
(Wii Fit had 5, and Wii Fit Plus added an addition 5, and renamed one)

Before getting on the board to be weighed and have my straightness measured, I warm up and practice
the 5 balance tests I have been given.

After being weighed, they ask if I want to end, or continue.
When you continue, they say, "Let's test your physical control with these
mind and body tests I've chosen just for you!

STEADINESS -- now called STILLNESS – stand still and balanced.
at first there is a box with a dot showing your steadiness,
then the  box moves and you must keep the dot still.
Then, the dot disappears, and you must still remain still

SINGLE  LEG  BALANCE – Stand on one foot for 30 seconds
The instructions say you can hold onto something or someone until you improve enough to stand alone.
I cross one foot over the other.

BASIC  BALANCE – shift weight to right then left, so the red bar is in the blue area for 3 seconds.
Then, the blue area is lower on the other side, and smaller.  There are 5 different positions –
ending with a tiny blue area with your weight equally balanced.

DUAL  BALANCE  TEST -- Hold the Wii Remote in both hands, level and straight.
(I press my elbos to my waist for better control.)  Then, shify your balance so it stays
in the blue area for 3 seconds.  Like the Basic Balance, the total weight has to stay
in the area, then, in addition, the remote has to be moved so it aligns with the area on the screen.

AGILITY  TEST – Hit and Pop Blue Boxes.  Shift weight around, left, right, front, back, to get
the marker to the blue boxes – which pops them.

WALKING  TEST – take 20 pretend steps, putting the same amount of weight on each side
for the same amount of time.

PREDICTION -- 60 seconds
Shift your center of balance right or left to avoid hitting walls or obstacles.
But, you have to look ahead and predict where the obstacles are going to move to.

JUDGMENT -- If a number is less than the given number, shift your center of balance
to select it.  If not, stay still, and I mean still.

PERIPHERAL  VISION -- First, align your balance so the red dot is in the middle blue circle.
Stand still, and numbers will appear on the screen.  While remaining still and keeping the red
dot in the blue circle, move only the remote so the cursor is on top of the lowest number,
and press A.  Select the numbers in ascending order, from 1 to 10 and press A for each number.
BUT, if you wobble and the red dot goes outside the blue circle, the numbers disappear, until
you balance the red dot again.

MEMORY  TEST -- 25 chances to compare the number in the center with the number to the right.
If the number to the right of the number in the center is greater, squat to mash the number ball.
Stay stable, or it will accuse you of squatting.  At first, you can see all the number balls,
but later, they start covering them up, to test your memory of what the numbers were.

VI.  GUIDES:  Getting a different guide to Explore Other Routes and Places

Your human or dog guide will have a gold pointer over his head.
Ordinarily, if you run too fast or pass your guide, you will get a written warning,
AND  the game will trip you, so you fall down.

But, when a dog barks and passes you,
you can speed past your current guide, and you will be told to follow the new dog.

That new dog will jump with glee, and have a pointer over his head.
He is your new guide.

HINT:  Instead of running really fast, you can jiggle and bounce the remote, momentarily,
until you pass your old guide and have the new dog as a guide.

VII.  Coping With The Wii Fit;
Wii Fit Problems and Solutions

Issue 1:  Length of Time to Calibrate Is Too Short
So, Wii Fit tells me to turn on the Balance Board and step off.
Then, when it tells me to step on, it tells me I am fidgeting, and to step off...

I had to do that 4 times when I first tried it -- and even today, it happened.

It takes me time to look at my feet and arrange them to the best position,
then I need to stand straight, and adjust my head, shoulders, hips, and
feel the weight on my heels, balls of my feet, and big toes.
BEEP -- took too long.

Today, I thought I would outsmart it, and put a 15 pound box on it, so I
could continue to play.  But, after I logged in as a guest and got the box accepted,
the board considered my weight at 15 pounds, and my slightest movement
sent the image of my Mii way off balance.  This was really clear when I did the
"soccer heading".

Before, I have set the Balance Board closer to the TV or a wall, to quicken my
balance state.  Once, I brought in a shopping cart that has a higher handle,
and put weight in it, so I could hold onto it, while getting on the board.

Today, when I decided on the optimal placement of my feet, I painted
the area on the Balance Board, around my big toes !!!

TO  NINTENDO  WII:  Maybe the next version of Wii Fit could have a longer
period for calibration; a place to select a longer calibration period; or
have it so that after you are situated on the board, you press the A button.

Issue 2:  SANDBOX
I use the balance games soccer heading to adjust myself and test out exercises
and moves.  I would like a "sandbox mode" where we could have the green
calibrating circle on screen for as long as we like.

I put a line between where I place the Balance Board and the middle of my TV.
I marked the center of the Wii Sensor.  I put a piece of tape behind the TV, so
I have something to focus on when I am keeping my balance.
Then, I put a mirror behind the TV, to check my posture.
BUT, because I am left handed and right eyed, I have to see the center of
my face a few inches to the left of the center line.  So, I would like to
have the sandbox to play in.

Issue 4:  WHY  DID  YOUR  WEIGHT  FLUCTUATE ?
I would like more reasons or "other".  Maybe I drank water or ate !
A simple cup of 8 oz. of water is half a pound.
Maybe the reason for the weight fluctuation  is that it is a different time of day,
and my body goes through normal fluctuations every day.

Between bedtime and morning, I lose 2 pounds.
Every morning I try to get up, use the restroom, and weigh myself.
But, I should not have to have that much of a hassle with the Wii Fit --
when none of its reasons for the weight fluctuation are my reason.
We need "other".

Issue 5:  Walking Test gives me from 29 to 100 percent.
I turn off the sound, so their noises do not disturb me.
I turn on my keyboard for rhythm, tap my foot to my leg, so it
registers that all my weight is on one foot, and other tricks.

The End
