Mirror Sculpting

David Peer

I developed this unique art form in 1983. At that time I was designing and producing hand crafted picture frames for a nationally known artist and for some of the finest art galleries in Washington, DC. Mirror Sculpting developed from a desire to put my own work in my frames. Becoming fascinated with the possibilities of Mirror Sculpting I abandoned the frame work. My first outlets were small craft fairs and craft stores. Eventually I found my way to the large juried craft fairs and opened my own store in Harpers Ferry, WV called Visions. Now relocated to the Richmond, VA area I am showing my unique art through my online store "Mirror Sculpting".

The images appear to be on the surface of the mirror, catching light and forming shadows, but are actually done on the back of the mirror. They have so much depth that when I'm displaying my work at art shows or craft fairs, even after I tell people the work is done on the back, they have to touch the mirror surface before they believe the glass is smooth.

You can look at a mirror in two ways. It's like looking through a window screen. If you focus on the screen, the Mirror Sculpture, you don't see the outside. If you focus on the outside, the mirror's reflection, you don't see the screen. My mirrors serve two purposes. They function as a mirror and as art.
