Fabrics

We are using Civil War reproduction fabrics or other fabrics that have the same feel. Civil War era fabrics were extremely varied, but the most common colors were brown, Turkey red, indigo or Prussian blue, teal, over dyed greens, and yellow. Prints ran from small to large scale, and stripes and plaids were popular. If you wish to use the fabrics you already own, choose muted colors and avoid bright contemporary prints. Browns, grays, and blues, mixed with prints on white are always acceptable. View the quilts we have presented, and at the other state’s websites, to see what others have used.  As quilts are finished and taken home to their Oregon families, there will be a photo posted in the Gallery of Fallen Heroes, beside the photo of the specific Marine or Soldier.

In addition to Quilting Delights in Clackamas, Craft Warehouse in Gresham, Let's Quilt in Oregon City, Grandma's Attic in Dallas, Fabric Depot and The Mill End Store in the Portland Metro area, here’s a link about places to find reproduction fabrics:

Operationhomefront.org

Many other local quilt stores, The Cotton Patch, Greenbaum's Quilted Forest in Salem, etc. also carry reproduction fabrics.  If you find one with a good selection, please let us know and we’ll add them to this page. Certainly most other fabric stores like Pioneer Quilts in Damascus and JoAnn's, etc. have a wide variety of beautiful fabrics that are of prints and colors that are perfectly acceptable.

Block Pattern

This  link will bring you to the 2-page block pattern you can print. You may also want to go to the LINKS page and visit some of the other state's websites to see the photos of their quilts and the directions they offer if they are using the Album Block.

Sewing a Quilt Top

Please contact the State Coordinator if you would like to sew a quilt top.  You will be sent a kit with instructions for completing the top, 15 signed blocks, yardage for the sashing, cornerstone blocks and borders. We have long arm quilters volunteering to quilt these tops, but if you wish you may also complete the quilt yourself.  Either way, the quilt tops or quilts are then returned to the State Coordinator for completion as needed, official project and U.S. Sanitary Commission Reproduction labels, photos and delivery to the families.

Anyone who took quilt top instructions at the Sisters Quilt Show on July 12, 2008, please note the changes for the amount of fabric and the cutting instructions. You can download the new instructions from the link below.
