OUR HISTORY
PACES was founded in 1994 by several individuals in various stages of their adoption experience, to recognize the diverse issues of all members of the Adoption Triad, including local professionals facillitating the adoption process. A not-for-profit agency, PACES is solely funded by it's members.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Families dealing with agency and private placement, both past and present, were lacking a forum to voice their feelings and deal with real issues surrounding adoption. New York State Laws to "Protect the Best Interest of the Child", also deny adult adoptees the right of choice.
A vast industry encompasses Archeology as mankind attempts to know and understand civilizations of the past. Historians constantly debate "Adam & Eve" vs. "Theory of Evolution". Yet, State laws and stone age misconceptions inhibit adult adoptees from obtaining their biological and medical background, setting them apart. The "True Life Interest" and Civil Rights should be returned to them as "Law needs to be consistent with Life.." (Oliver Wendell Holmes, Supreme Court Justice)
Parents wishing to adopt, faced with present day choices, are not clear on the laws governing their families. Lacking basic knowledge of procedures that will, in fact, inpact their entire lives and that of their adopted children is in no ones "Best Interest."
OUR METHODOLOGY
While PACES does deal with adoption issues and agency refferals, most of our members are actively searching or have searched for their birth parent, birth child or sibling. We will gladly assist you in your particular search, but our main emphasis is on empowering you to do your own research. By allowing you to take control of your search, we hope to give you insight into the adoption system and into your own personal story.
PACES does not charge to help you in your search, except for requiring membership. And unlike professional searchers, who merely provide you with the information you seek, PACES helps you understand your own feelings and those of the other triad members. Rushing into a reunion without first dealing with your own feelings or empathizing with those of the people/families you find may cause misunderstandings and hard feelings on both sides, thereby affecting the initial outcome. Whether you chose to search yourself or hire a paid searcher, PACES urges you to join a local adoption support group. The key to a happy reunion is understanding. Once we understand each other, then there will be no more need for secrecy.
