I met Ted Pugh in the late 1960's when we worked together at the arboretum in Los Angeles, that great outdoor plant museum that lies on the lee-side of the San Gabriel Mountains. There, even before I'd read any of his poetry, I was impressed by the prose essays he fashioned for the arboretum's rotating botanical displays and the quarterly journal we published. Each of these little pieces, enhanced with pen and ink drawing, was a finely honed gem, a charming and lyrical - yet factual - history of a flowering plant or tree in the arboretum's collection.
A few years later, while editing Westways, I was privileged to publish a group of Ted's poems, works that embodied his concrete observations of life and landscape, his almost mystical insights into that thing we know as nature - what Ted Pugh calls "this other skin" of our existence.
The works in [his] book reflect the full spectrum of a poet's vision and intuition, the full range of a craftsman's love of language.
