MASTERED BY LOVE
Stephanie Laurens

RBL Rating: 5 HUGH

I adored MASTERED BY LOVE. I love Stephanie Laurens' use of the English language. She excels at revealing how a character thinks as well as how he or she feels. And in this story she deftly interwove many historical and societal aspects.

Her Dalziel/Royce is a man who sacrificed a major portion of his life for love of country. He deserved to be happy - especially since it was revealed in the book preceding MASTERED BY LOVE that, unlike other members of the Bastion Club, he had not had a very happy childhood. Every single one of his spies he handpicked - and, consequently, they ALL had qualities and traits very similar to him. But, unlike the others, while growing up he had been abused and neglected. In all the other novels he had been the brooding, feared character - but he was the one the other members of the club knew they could go to - the one who always helped them. He could have become like his self-indulgent and abusive father, but instead he observed, absorbed, learned and chose to set a different course.

I think that is the moral of the of the entire Bastion Club series: how the one everyone expected to have the hard "cold" heart was MASTERED BY LOVE and broke away from his childhood abuse. He wanted to be more than what historically had been for members of his family - what the ton had expected him to be, what the ton felt, in spite of all he had accomplished and sacrificed, he was entitled to. He wanted to set his own course and destiny, choose his own woman - as much as he wanted Minerva - he desperately wanted her love. At first I was infuriated by the ladies of the ton who demanded he marry anyone - as a form of "duty" - as soon as possible after he returned home. Then I realized that, in their own way, they were trying to protect his heritage as they had protected his true identity while he had protected them and their country. Here Laurens had ably incorporated the real life politics of the day - the ladies of the ton, as well as Royce and Minerva, were determined to prevent the horrid Prince Regent (the son of the mad King George, known for his many excesses and debts, was considered a blight on England during that time in history) from confiscating Wolverstone, Royce's ancestral home. But once the ladies of the ton realized Royce and Minerva were marrying for love, they redeemed themselves and rallied around the couple.

Laurens also gave us great insight into how ducal homes functioned at that time in history and how Royce set out to change things - to break from tradition and "modernize." He was determined to make a difference in the lives of the people who worked for him - he was ahead of his time - a Renaissance man. And I thought Minerva his equal in every way - in bed and out. (Their love scenes were beautifully done and incredibly vivid.) Through Minerva we learned his parents had not only led very unhappy lives and had deep regrets for what they had done to him, but before their deaths had left messages with Minerva for him. Minerva's parents had married for love - and it was that love which shaped her and kept her going while she waited for Royce to return home. In one very touching scene Minerva left Royce alone in the dark to grieve and come to grips with his past.

I didn't want the book to be about the traitor - I wanted it to be devoted to Dalziel/Royce - and it was! I wanted to know what he gave up and how he dealt with it while he "hid" in plain sight - and I wanted Royce to find love and Laurens delivered. And finally, I think the cover is incredibly romantic and sensual, and the absolute epitome of what Dalziel/Royce would look like. Stephanie Laurens repeatedly told us he was very handsome, looked younger than his years, had dark bedroom eyes, dark wavy hair and was well built - and he had a fierce temper he controlled and used to his advantage. I would love to see more of Royce and Minerva's romance in follow up books - not just "visits" but more of their lives together with whatever children they may have.

I couldn't put the book down. I've re-read it several times! I highly, highly recommend this beautiful book - I give it a number 5 for great story telling and a HUGH for GREAT SEX!

KISSING MIDNIGHT

RBL Rating: 4+ HUGH

What can I say, but WOW? I have read most of Emma Holly's books and liked them, so when I was given the privilege of reading her newest ARC - KISSING MIDNIGHT - I couldn't wait to be entertained ... and I was!

I couldn't put this book down, and I savored the last pages like it was milk chocolate. I knew the end was coming, there weren't that many more pages, but I thought maybe the ending was there, there had to be a HEA ... but nooooooooooo. The last page was there all right, and the story did end, but the HEA? Well, that must be in a coming book because this one ended in a cliffhanger. Darn it Ms. Holly - lol - when's the next one coming out? Next month? ::looking hopeful::

Ms. Holly has started a new series - The Fitz Clare Chronicles. This series takes you inside the world of vampires; you learn that, besides the "normal" blood drinking kind, there is another - the "upyrs" - they are shapeshifting vampires.

In KISSING MIDNIGHT, Ms. Holly has started the series with a family ... a slightly unusual family. The father is an upyr who has adopted human children, not for the purpose of using them as convenient food as you might think, but to have a family, to give them a chance at being a family. She introduces you to the patriach of the family - Edmund Fitz Clare, upyr vampire and almost elder of his kind. You also get a peek at his blood family, a brother and son, both of whom are also upyrs. You get to meet the children that Edmund adopted - Sally, Ben and Graham - as well as the unexpected addition to their family of Sally's best friend Estelle.

In Estelle, Edmund has discovered someone whom he desires, but does nothing about it because at the time she comes to live with them she's only a teen, one who has been unexpectedly orphaned and injured in a freak lightning accident. Once she is grown, however, things change, and Edmund has a harder and harder time not acting on his desires until things just kind of spill over.

The back of the ARC gives this blurb, and in my opinion it's a great description:
Edmund Fitz Clare has been keeping secrets he can't afford to expose. Not to the orphans he's adopted. Not to the lovely young woman he's been yearning after for years. He's an upyr - a shapeshifting vampire - desperate to redeem past misdeeds.

Estelle Berenger knows better than to fall for her best friend's father - besides being sexy, brilliant, and kind, he's also quite eccentric! Estelle could overlook Edmund's peculiar allergy to the sun if this were his only oddity. Instead, he seems to hold the key to her own mystery: ever since she was truck by lightning as a teenager, she's had abilities - and strengths - no normal woman should possess.

The star-crossed pair might be able to resist each other, but deep in the heart of London, a vampire war is brewing, a conflict that threatens to throw Edmund and Estelle together - and to turn his beloved human family against him ...

Ms. Adams and Ms. Clamp have done it yet again! In this story Tony's back, and with a vengeance you could say.

The blurb on the back reads:
Tony is Back
Former Mafia hit man Tony Giodone has been through a lot - he's turned into a werewolf with a human mate and a pack leader tougher than his old Mob boss. And he's developed a powerful psychic ability - he can see into the past through other people's memories.

Being mated with a human is difficult in more ways than one. Tony and Sue's relationship is full of struggle. Adding to Tony's trouble is a new problem with some old mobster "friends" ... who also happen to be a cabal of Sazi mass murderers trying to extinguish the human race.

Only one man might be able to help Tony and the Sazi stop the cabal; Ahmad, the leader of the snakes. He and Tony have a deeper psychic connection than Tony has with anyone else - even his mate! Now Tony is along for the psychic ride of his life as the crown prince of an ancient empire is faced with his deadliest enemy; a woman he once loved, whom he was forced to betray ... one who may now betray Ahmad, Tony, and all of humanity.

This is Book # 7 of the Sazi Series, and each book centers around one or more of the shapeshifters; this one centers, as you might be able to guess from the blurb, around Ahmad, with Tony and others being a close second. Since I haven't to date particularly liked the character of Ahmad, I was surprised at how much I ended up liking this story. Even though Ahmad is the "main" romance, you also get to experience Tony and Sue's relationship a bit more. If you haven't read the other books in this series, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND doing so; it's NOT necessary, but it does give a person more insight into the characters. The other books are HUNTER'S MOON, MOON'S WEB, CAPTIVE MOON, HOWLING MOON, MOON'S FURY, and TIMELESS MOON.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

From the book: One conference, two friends, two men who know how to take care of business.

After leaving the wrong man, Leah Griffin’s not ready to look for the right one. All she wants is to survive the conference she’s planning and spend some time with her best friend Kate Edwards. She’s not expecting the conference services manager to be so tall, dark and handsome ... or so eager to please. It’s Brandon Long’s job to make Leah happy, but after a scorching interlude in her hotel room, neither can deny business has become pleasure.

Smart, driven and successful attorney, Katherine Edwards has spent her life making the right choices. Directly counter to those right choices, she’s involved in a long distance, secret love affair with a co-worker. Charles Dixon is a bad choice she can’t help but make – over and over. A conference and a promotion bring Kate back to Pennsylvania and suddenly, Dix wants far more than a few nights in random hotel rooms. He wants something permanent and Katherine has to figure out if sometimes a wrong choice isn’t exactly what a woman needs.

As the back blurb says, this book is about two couples -- two best friends and their men. The book begins with Leah ending a relationship as she’s heading out the door to a weekend conference. She has been increasingly unhappy and dissatisfied with the entire relationship. She was losing herself in her former relationship and, over the course of the book, discovers who she is with Brandon.

Kate is a high powered lawyer who has been having a secret long distance liaison with Leah’s coworker, Charles “Dix” Dixon. Because of her past, Kate is very reluctant to get involved with a business associate. Dix is a divorcee who is very involved with his teenaged daughters and, sort of by default, his ex.

The two romances were developing concurrently. And yes, shockingly for a Black Lace book, I do use the word "romances!" The authors flipped from Kate to Leah to Brandon and Dix. The authors did a masterful job of meshing the emotions of the couples and the external conflicts.

This book is very much about the entire journey, not just the destination. You see the relationships and people evolve. This wasn’t a book just about sex, but clearly about the couples.

If I had any complaints, Leah and Brandon’s story ended a little abruptly. It would have been nice if their reunion lasted more than three pages and had come about a little less abruptly.

And, of course, since this is an erotic romance there is plenty of hot, hot sex! The foreplay was amazing. I wouldn’t have thought that a list of work duties could have been turned into sexual foreplay. For readers who have taboos they don’t want to read, rest easy with this book. Even though the sex scenes are hot, they aren’t going to trip taboo triggers.

I would very much recommend this book and plan on reading more by both Megan Hart and Lauren Dane. BTW - I went over to Amazon to see about leaving a rating. The books that popped up in the section "customers also bought" were Lora Leigh, Lauren Dane, Megan Hart, and Maya Banks. That to me is one heck of a recommendation.

This was the first book I read by Ms. Dean, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. She managed to include some serious facts about dreaming with fiction, which is very difficult to do. The entire idea of the Dream Wreakers is slightly unusual, in that a person, in this case the hero Cael Oneiros (one of several brothers), helps others dream; therefore, getting a good night's sleep, they are able to function normally throughtout the following day. And the heroine, Devon Bradshaw, who's a witch but doesn't know it, accepts without question the fact that she has these feelings that come true.

Desperate to touch the man that appears in her dreams, Devon Bradshaw attempts a love spell. Imagine her surprise when not only does it appear to work, but it also appears to have severe consequences for others. It takes both Cael and Devon working together, along with Cael's brothers, to make things right and to allow Devon and Cael to have their happy ever after.

The passion between Cael and Devon is enough to make you want a cold shower after reading it. Ms. Dean does an excellent job on characters and descriptions. I'm looking forward to any further books by her with these characters.

This is the second book I have read by Ms. Dean and it lived up to my expectations. She hooked me in her first book - WHAT SHE WANTS AT MIDNIGHT - and I had to know more about the Dream Wreakers. In this story she gives us the tale of another brother - Derek Oneiros.

This time around Ms. Dean has a created a book that's more of a suspense thriller than the last one, and there are some truly ... uh ... creepy (for want of a better word) events that take place.

Derek Oneiros is a security specialist. Shea Caldwell is a research scientist with a troubled past, and what appears to be a troubled present as well. By day their relationship is strictly professional, but at night Shea dreams of Derek and their being together. Lately, Shea is afraid to go to sleep, as she wakes up in strange places. She fears the sleepwalking problem she had as a child is back. Not only is she not sleeping properly, she believes someone is stealing research from her company.

Security expert Derek Oneiros was called in to try and prevent someone from crippling the company; along the way he fell in love with Shea. I very much enjoyed reading SCIONS: INSURRECTION. Although I hadn’t read the first novel of the trilogy, SCIONS: RESURRECTION, I didn’t have to read it in order to enjoy this story. It was entertaining and complete unto itself. But, after reading this one, I can’t wait to read about how the story began - and how it will end in the final novel, SCIONS: REVELATION.

Patrice Michelle drew me into the story with her first sentence and kept me captivated until the end. I hated to put the book down and couldn’t wait to pick it back up again. Romance, passion, and intrigue fill the pages. Before receiving the ARC, I visited her website (http://www.patricemichelle.net/novels/index.html), where she has excerpts from several novels available. These excerpts just made me eager to read more.

This book is definitely Landon’s Story, as the author refers to it. His thoughts, feelings, and point of view are used throughout the story. Patrice seamlessly transitions between the hero's and the heroine’s points of view.

The sexual tension between Kaitlyn and Landon began building even before they met face-to-face. They don’t consummate their relationship immediately, but the heat between them builds throughout the novel. Oh, and you will never believe the twists within the story.

This book is a great read.

This paranormal romantic suspense features Jasmine Tremaine, a witch who “can’t stay out of trouble,” and Nikolai Gregorivich, a drop-dead (you should pardon the expression) handsome vampire cop on the trail of a serial killer. Jazz works mostly as a driver for a limo service for paranormal creatures, with a little witchcraft on the side.

Jazz and Nick have been lovers, on and off, for nearly 300 years – and this case may bring that affair to a screeching halt if the killer has his way. He has powers that may overcome even the combination of a witch and a vampire – despite their allies’ aid. And the allies are truly different from the usual corps – Norma, a chain-smoking ghost who inhabits Jazz’s classic car; Dweezil, her ghoulish boss (although no one’s quite sure WHAT species Dweezil actually represents); and, best of all, Fluff and Puff, a pair of bunny slippers with fangs and tempers who’ll eat almost anything.

I found myself quickly pulled into this sizzling, funny, exciting story, and will be anxiously awaiting the sequel - on which I hope Linda’s working even as I speak.

I’d have to class this one as “erotica” – considering that the male character, Cat, is the last of a species envied galaxy-wide for their sexual talents (and we get to see those in some detail). He is purchased by Jacinth, an interstellar trader on the trail of her kidnapped sister. She needs a male to “represent” her on a planet where women are mere chattel, and offers him a deal – freedom for cooperation in the rescue.

As Jacinth and Cat trek across the stars, following the faint and fading trail of her sister’s kidnappers, they become more than business partners. They become lovers (wouldn’t be much of a romance if they didn’t, would it?) – and Jacinth makes some startling discoveries about Cat and his people.

He’s on a quest as well – to find and punish the races responsible for the holocaust which wiped out his whole planet. Someone is bent on genocide; and if they find out even one of Cat’s race still exists, both their lives will be forfeit.

I’d recommend this futuristic romance to anyone who enjoys strong characters and a compelling plot – and doesn’t mind the rather graphic sensual scenes portrayed. It kept me reading, despite my general preference for less-explicit fare!

Jack is a special agent required to be gone for months at a time working dangerous missions. Before he is called away on his next assignment, he overhears Carmen speak of her sexual desires, fantasizing that he is her dominant in the bedroom. He immediately acts on his two years of attraction to her, introducing her to the dom/submissive lifestyle for the first time. He has every intention of keeping her forever, BUT ... after a few glorious hours he must leave her for many months to work on his next dangerous mission.

I was very impressed and titillated learning how this man took care of his woman, not just physically, but also anticipating her needs mentally and emotionally. What woman wouldn’t want that???

Read Gail’s book from Ellora’s Cave coming in January to learn the sexy details of how a secret agent and a nurse combine their lives to make their own happily-ever-after.

This is the first book I've ever read by Patrice Michelle, and it is fantastic. It's not your usual soft and fluffy romance. This book has depth, grit and adventure that I didn't expect in a Silhouette novel.

I love the character development of the heroine, Ariel. She morphs from a quiet librarian into a (surprising to her) strong female who wears her bluster and bravado as a shield, even though she's shaking in her shoes.

The hero, Jachin, does an opposite metamorphosis, due only to his unwanted developing desire and grudging respect toward Ariel. He unashamedly detests humans and is forced to revise his opinion of the entire race from his experiences with a single tiny woman into whose company he is forced - Ariel. His love for her breaks down barriers and makes him vulnerable as never before.

The non-stop action/adventure in this book appealed to me greatly. The heart-tugging, seriously hot romance in this book hooked me completely. I'm going out to purchase all of Patrice Michelle's books!

BEYOND THE DARK

Let me say first that I loved this book. Emma's story rocked, and the others were good as well. It's unusual to find an anthology these days where all the stories are good, but this one is one of those. Don't miss this one folks - you'll kick yourself if you do.

The stories are:
"Dragon Dance" by Angela Knight - This is about a police officer that becomes something a little more than "normal". When a "routine" hostage call takes an unexpected turn, a policewoman/hostage negotiator comes up against the paranormal when the hostage taker is one who has been contaminated by a virus. The hostage situation is taken out of her hands by the hero, another who has abilities. This is an unusual virus, in that it doesn't make a person sick but instead expands their inherent psi abilities and allows them to become symbiotic to an alien race that gives them so much more.

"Caught by the Tides" by Diane Whiteside - This story is about mages in Victorian England and France. And about the lengths they go to, to either stop or start a war (depending on which side they're on). And about love, and how with the love of the right person, even a mage can become more powerful. And how, even if someone doesn't appear to have magical talent, you might be surprised at what they can actually do if they allow themselves to feel.

"Queen of All She Surveys" by our own Emma Holly - Emma again takes us into the magical world of the Yamma in this story. It's a story about love and betrayal, a king who not only betrays his people but also his own son ... a queen who has risen above her peasant-like beginnings and overcome great odds ... a prince and a queen, and the love that slowly comes through trust.

"In a Wolf's Embrace" by Lora Leigh - If you like the Breed series you'll like this one as well. A wolf breed has met his mate, but with just one slight problem. He's an assassin, and she witnessed his killing of her boss. Breed and human - can they overcome their differences enough to become true mates, or will he have to take that final step and eliminate the only witness - his mate?

I read "Dragon Dance" and thought this is an unusal idea, a virus that allows a person to become like a superhero - providing they don't go crazy while adjusting. Then to find out that the virus actually allows an alien race to inhabit your body and gives you your "powers". An unusual read but very well done, and I'm looking forward to seeing if Ms. Knight does any other stories in this line. To me, it was as good as her Mageverse series.

Ms. Whiteside's contribution seemed to start in a fairly normal way - if you're a mage, that is. Then to have the hero rescued by the heroine who really doesn't seem to have magical talents, only to discover she does, at first it seemed a little formulaic. But as the story goes on, you discover that while the heroine does have magical talent, it appears to be minor, but it's tied to the land, and when she finally opens herself to the land, her power allows the hero to help stop a war.

Emma Holly's story - what can I say? The story rocked! I didn't like the king from the get-go, and then when he "threw" his son to the queen as a gesture of peace, I liked him even less. But when I discovered just what the king had done in the past to the queen, and what he had planned for his son and the queen in the near future, I was ready to lead a war party myself against him.

I've followed Ms. Leigh's Breed series since I found them, and I still haven't read them all. This one is a typical Breed, albeit a wolf and not a feline, so there are some differences. An assassin and his mate, the witness. There was no doubt in my mind that he loves her and she loves him, but she won't stay unless he changes his ways. When he calls her "his sunshine," I cried. It was beautifully written, and kept me turning the pages even at 1:30 a.m.

I just finished CREATION IN DEATH by JD Robb! Yup, the next Eve and Roarke book - which actually comes out November 6th - I got lucky and got it early to review.

If I had to describe this book in one word that word would be RIVETING. It caught my attention within the first few pages and held it. LOL - so much so that the family got tired of waiting for me to fix supper and someone decided to bring home McD's.

The mystery is very skillfully woven through the story with hints popping up here and there, but you don't really get a sense of "who done it" until nearly the end. You get to see Eve and Roarke's relationship deepen even further, as does Eve's and Feeney's.

The killer ("The Groom") was actually one of the first cases Eve worked on as a detective, and he got away. Now he's back, and you could say he's back with a vengeance. Nine years and at least twenty kills later, he comes back to where he started/ ... but why? That's the question. And can Eve and crew stop him this time
