Reading Discussion FAQs!

The moderators will post a few questions to get the discussion going.

Each question from the moderator will be set up as individual posts - new threads for each, and each response will be put under that posted question. Just like we do at the main board. If anyone wants to contribute a question, you may add it during the discussion.

The discussion is scheduled to begin on a certain date, but will go on as many days as we wish it to. That's why we like to use the message board style for the discussions instead of a chaotic live chat where not everyone can participate.

A VERY IMPORTANT point to remember is this -

Our book discussions are for us, the READERS. They are NOT presented as a Q & A session for authors to explain or justify what they wrote. NOW, and this is very important - an author, if she wishes, can (& almost always does) participate with us - that is her decision to be there to answer questions or not. But first & foremost this is a READERS discussion, with sometimes author participation.

This can be a plus or minus knowing our author is there (even lurking) and we may tend to feel constricted in our comments. But we need to remember we are allowed to express a negative opinion on some aspect of the book - it's OUR discussion and it might be unfairly slanted if it's how we felt and didn't say so.

But this CAN be done - both positive and negative - as long as everyone remembers that criticism is not a bad thing as long as it is CONSTRUCTIVE and worded in a way as to not hurt anyone. There IS a way to express criticism in an intelligent, constructive & positive way. We just need to think our words through and they will come out right. I guess the old adage about "think before you speak" is a good one and holds true in all facets of life, and applies well to our book discussions.

Have fun and enjoy the discussions!
