Meet The River Sirens Dragonboat Team

Our Mission Statement

The River Sirens is a women's dragon boat team
dedicated to the continuing growth of our members' minds, bodies and spirits.

By building camaraderie in a respectful and supportive environment,
we are able to increase our own physical fitness and spiritual well being.

We welcome women of all ages, abilities and fitness levels
and strive to encourage a passion for the ancient art of dragon boating.

By participating in community services, we are a supportive influence
for cancer survirors in the South Jersey area.

About Our Team

Revived from the distracting divas of the water in Homer's The Oddysey, this group of determined women is entering its third season of paddling. Friends, sisters, aunts, moms, and grandmothers, who met at Royal Fitness in Barrington, New Jersey, this group united to support one another in staying healthy and strong. We are committed to reaching out to local women battling breast cancer, through the Cooper Cancer Fund, providing financial assistance to individuals throughout treatment. Our training has included both group and individual programs at the gym, as well as paddling on the Schuylkill River and Mercer Lake.

Many a gourmand is at home in the group - which sports a police officer, a librarian, teachers, financial professionals, a painter, an actor, singers, yogis, a nurse, and a dental hygenist.

In 2005, the River Sirens won the Novice Women's Challenge at the Philadelphia International Dragonboat Festival. It was our first race ever, as a team.

We returned to the festival in 2006, to win the Women's Challenge by an enormous margin!

After spending two years practicing on Mercer Lake in Central New Jersey and on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, under the direction of our coach, Ellen Law, of the New Jersey Dragonboat Club, and Daria Sohanchak-Teti, our fearless leader and team captain, we're thrilled to annouce the acquisition of our very own Dragonboat, thanks to our sponsor/partner, the Cooper Cancer Institute. With the construction of the new boathouse facility at the Cooper River, right here in South Jersey, we hope to continue and grow as an outstanding team of paddlers and amazing women. We will never stop our efforts of raising funds for our cause, but we're also thrilled to have the opportunity to mentor a sister team of cancer survivors River Sisters.
