ATTITUDES OF THE TONGUE
by Michelle Stace

      The tongue of silence, mute and dumb,
          Lacks the courage to proclaim.
         A ready tongue gives an answer,
          Full of praise for Jesus’ name.

                    The earthly tongue talks of plans,
                      Worldly pleasures and selflove;
                The heavenly tongue cares not for this,
                    Seeking first the kingdom above.

                                            The hasty tongue exalts folly,
                                       Quick to judge, condemn and censor.
                                          Be the one who stops to ponder,
                                           Quick to listen, slow to answer.

     A slandering tongue is one of betrayal,
         Whispering secrets not its own.
  The tongue of discretion conceals a matter,
     Keeps the trust, won’t make it known.

                        Lying lips are abomination,
                      Flattering lines, little white lies;
                         But they that deal truly,
                         Are the Lord’s delight.

                                            A boastful tongue blows its own horn;
                                              It's like a cloud which gives no rain.
                                                 Better is a tongue of meekness,
                                                   Whose deeds are not in vain.

                                                       The wise, discerning tongue
                                                          Is healing to the bones;
                                                         The fruit of a pure heart,
                                                         And sweet as honeycomb.

                               “Let your speech be
                                 always with grace,
                                seasoned with salt,
                         that you may know how you
                          ought to answer every man.”
                                        Col. 4:6
