Those Lowly Feet
By Michelle Stace
Laying aside His garments, He took a towel and was
gird,
Then slowly poured some water in a basin at His side.
And kneeling at their feet,
no sound at all was heard
Except a few hushed whispers; dismay in all their eyes.
Such
humble willing service as on Himself He took
The dirt and smell and sweat from travel
weary feet.
Washed as if with tears; not escaping though He could,
The burden of transgressions
in those lowly dirty feet.
Astonished Peter said, 'Lord dost Thou wash my feet?'
Those
lowly dirty feet, why not head or hands instead?
But there the Savior knelt till His
task complete;
'You know not now, but will when in My steps you tread.'
Peter meant
to stand with Jesus as He was put on trial,
But the depth of sinful heart made him
utter a denial.
And then he understood when, 'Jesus turned and looked,'
The sacrifice
He made when from his feet the dirt He took.
